ZON files store zone definitions for documents. They are used in OmniPage software to recognize text. ZON files allow saving zone layouts to process multiple documents similarly.
OmniPage uses optical character recognition to make scanned images and PDFs editable. It supports over 120 languages. OmniPage was developed by Nuance Communications. Nuance was purchased by Kofax in 2019.
Opening ZON files requires having OmniPage installed. If ZON files open incorrectly in other programs, try double clicking the file. This triggers the operating system to launch the associated OmniPage application.
Two file types use .zon extension. First type is OmniPage Zone Template File. It stores framed zones of images for OmniPage to process. Second type is Collection Building Custom Zone File. This format seems obsolete now.
