After downloading an update file via Encarta’s Yearbook Builder or The Microsoft Network (MSN), users installed that update using Yearbook Builder. As part of this process, Yearbook Builder replaced the EYB file with a YBK file saving the same information in a format optimized for integration with Encarta, referred to as an “integrated Yearbook” file. Encarta stores YBK files in the Program Files/Microsoft Reference/Encarta Encyclopedia ##/Update## directory.
YBK files contain Encarta encyclopedia article and content updates that help keep information current without upgrading the entire program. The YBK file is located in the “\Program Files\Microsoft Reference\Encarta Encyclopedia\UpdateXX\” directory. Without proper software the system will give an error when trying to open YBK files.
