An XSD file defines what elements and attributes may appear in an XML document. It also defines relationships of the elements and what data may be stored in them. XSD files are written in the W3C XML Schema language. An XSD file stores its contents as plain text in XML format. XSD files may be used as an alternative to Document Type Definition (.DTD) files for defining XML schemas.
The XML Schema Definition tool generates class files for an XSD schema. It also generates an XML schema from a library or executable file. XSD lets you examine XML documents to see if they follow specific rules about organization and data.
XSD files are saved with the .xsd file extension. XSD files store contents as plain text in XML format. XSD files can be opened and viewed by any text editor and numerous other programs. To edit an XSD file, use an XML editor like Microsoft XML Notepad.
XSD defines constraints, like setting acceptable value ranges for elements. It also enforces specific formatting rules for data. XSD ensures data entered follows the structure defined in the file. Another type of XSD file is a cross stitch design created by Pattern Maker.
XSD was recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium to express rules validating/invalidating XML documents. XSD files in Windows 10 open with Microsoft Visual Studio. You need suitable software like Visual Studio to open an XSD file.
