The xlk file extension is associated with Microsoft Excel, which is one of the most popular and powerful tools to create format spreadsheets, graphs and more. Xlk files were used by earlier versions of Microsoft Excel for workbook file backups. The latest Excel can open the xlk files.
Windows does not recognize the xlk file type by default. To open a xlk file, users must associate the xlk file extension with an appropriate program in Windows. Many files contain simple text data. If Windows doesn’t recognize a filename extension, a message appears to select an app to open the xlk file.
There are two main options to open xlk files:
Method 1: Rename the file extension to xlsx and open the file in Excel. To do this, right-click the file, choose “Rename”, change the extension to xlsx, and then open the renamed file in Excel.
Method 2: Associate the xlk file extension with the corresponding software in the Windows Registry. Users can search the Microsoft website for available Excel updates as only the latest versions fully support current xlk formats.
