XFACE files were black and white image files used as Usenet or email avatars in the 1990s. An XFACE file contains a 48 x 48 pixel image. XFACE file extension is created by James Ashton and classified as Raster Image Files in Binary format.
On Windows, right click an XFACE file and click “Open with”> “Choose another app” to open XFACE files in another program. Check “Always use this app to open .XFACE files” to set default program. On Mac, right click XFACE file and click “Open with”> “Other…” and choose another program. Check “Always Open With” box to set default. On Linux, right click file, select “Open with” and choose a program. On iPhone, tap the file to open it.
When double clicking a file to open in Windows, the operating system checks the file extension. If Windows recognizes the extension, it opens the file with associated program. When it does not recognize the extension (like .xface), you get a message to select an app to open file. This means Windows does not have a default program set to open these file types.
Although X-Face data is often stored in files, there is no standard format. .face and .xface extensions have been suggested, or file named “.face”. Sometimes “X-Face:” header is included, sometimes not. Different software has different requirements.
