A file extension is a suffix added to a file’s name, separated by a period, defining its type. Extensions indicate how data is organized so software can access it. In “expenses.xlsx” the extension “xlsx” shows it’s an Excel file. Extensions provide quick insight into file types. Windows uses common extensions like .docx for Word docs. To view extensions in File Explorer, turn on “File name extensions” in View settings. ZI files are Zip archives renamed to bypass email blocks on .zips. Open by renaming a .zi to .zip. Multics doesn’t split file names into base and extension, allowing “.” in names. So multiple or no suffixes are possible.
