A VMU file stores slide images and metadata created by the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer scanner. NanoZoomer is used by pathologists to scan and view digital images of specimens. VMU files are uncompressed, so they can be large. VMS files are compressed versions.
To open a VMU file, use ImageScope or netScope Viewer on Windows. Most files in this format are not meant to be opened directly. However, common graphics formats can usually be exported.
If double-clicking a VMU file does not open it, right-click and select “Open With.” Choose another program from the list that can open VMU files. Updating the software associated with the VMU extension may help open the file.
The VMU extension is specifically for the NanoZoomer pathology scanner and software from Hamamatsu Photonics. The files store data used by the NanoZoomer software.
