Files with .vmss extension are VMware Suspended State Files. They save suspended state of a virtual machine. The suspended state refers to when the virtual machine is temporarily stopped. VMware software creates and saves .vmss files in VM files automatically when pausing VMs. For example, Fusion saves .vmss files in .vmwarevm files. By default Fusion saves them here: Macintosh HD/ Users/ [username]/ Virtual Machines. When resuming a VM, software deletes the .vmss file. So .vmss files only exist while VMs are suspended.
To open .vmss files, double-click them. If set correctly, the application to open them will launch. VMware Workstation commonly handles .vmss files. But 2 other tools may also open them. The .vmss file contains suspended VM state. Earlier VMware products used .std extension for such files. Virtual machine files and profiles use .vmss files. Use VMware software to run the virtual machine. Probably .vmss files cannot convert to other formats.
Online tools allow viewing, editing, converting, merging, splitting, and comparing .vmss files without installing anything. Click links to see details for each feature. If unable to open .vmss files correctly, right-click or long-press then choose “Open with” and select an application. Can also display .vmss files directly in browsers.
