The VCRD file extension is used by Microsoft Windows programs. Specifically, it is associated with the Windows Credential Manager software introduced in Windows 7. This program manages user passwords, logins, and other credentials. VCRD files, along with VPOL and VSCH files, are saved in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Vault folder in Windows.
If you cannot open a VCRD file, it does not necessarily mean the appropriate software is not installed. Other issues may block the ability to open Windows Vault Credentials files. Possible problems include file corruption, incorrect registry entries linking to the file, or accidental registry deletion.
When you double-click a VCRD file to open it, Windows checks the filename extension. If unrecognized, Windows cannot open the file in an associated program. Instead you see the message “Select an app to open this .vcrd file”. This means Windows does not have a default program set to open the VCRD file type. The Windows Credential Manager itself or password recovery software like Passcape can open VCRD files.
