A file extension is letters after the last period in a file name. For example, .txt is the extension of file.txt. Extensions tell the operating system the file type and program to open it. The only rules are that it starts with a period and has at least one more character.
By default, Windows hides extensions. You can show them in File Explorer. Open file properties to view the extension. Opens with shows the program to open the file.
Extensions indicate the file format. The docx extension tells your computer to open the file in Word and show the Word icon. Most extensions work with multiple programs. Changing the extension won’t convert the file or change anything but the name.
JPG (.jpg/.jpeg) is an image format. PNG (.png) is also an image format. WebP (.webp) is another. File-Extensions.org has a library explaining many file types. Extensions help identify file types when working on a computer.
