TEXTCLIPPING files are text fragments generated in macOS when text is highlighted in an application and dragged to the desktop or Finder. The file extension .textclipping indicates a document with clipped text. TEXTCLIPPING filenames use the first characters from the highlighted text. These files can be viewed by double clicking in Finder. Their text can then be manually selected, copied and pasted elsewhere.
Programs that support .textclipping files can open them on any operating system after transferal. However, not all systems properly handle such files. TEXTCLIPPING files function as an alternative to copy-paste in macOS. They contain only text data viewable in any text editor, provided the text data still exists. Some applications allow export of .textclipping files by saving the text as a JPEG, PNG or other picture format.
