A TAX21 file contains a 2021 federal IRS tax form and 2021 state tax forms. TAX21 files store user’s personal information. TurboTax is available as a desktop version or web version. The desktop version creates TAX2021 files when saving returns. TAX21 files are uncommon as TurboTax 2021 does not save them by default. You can open a TAX21 file with the 2021 desktop TurboTax. When double-click a file, Windows checks the extension. If Windows recognizes the extension, it opens the file in the associated program. When Windows does not recognize an extension, you get a message to select a program. Other programs besides the intended ones can use the .tax21 extension to create files. This includes potentially harmful programs generating .tax21 files. Be cautious with .tax21 files from unknown sources. The .tax21 extension is often given incorrectly.
