System files are found with various file extensions. Each operating system uniquely uses them for different purposes. Common system file extensions are; CAB, DLL, DRV, and SYS. These extensions provide formats for internal operating system use. These formats are required for any operating system functionality and health.
System files are an important file format group. Operating systems use them. If any are missing or corrupted, operating systems usually work incorrectly or not at all. Preventive measures are taken. Many system files have the hidden attribute set. So they aren’t visible to users.
The System Files category relates to Mac, Windows, and Linux. Examples include system libraries, icons, themes, and device drivers. Files output by the system are also included. Common system file extensions include .DLL, .DRV, .SYS, and .CAB.
System files are those related to operation. A new computer includes them already. They are not something we download later.
It is impossible to remember all file extensions. Also the programs associated with them. An entire list of system file extensions and types is on our computer files page.
Files used only by the operating system are often hidden. This prevents accidental changes. However it is often possible to change this setting. System files can include device drivers, indexes, libraries, cursors, icons and help files. They may not be compatible with other operating systems. Printer drivers are an exception. They may work with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
