The SUM file extension is used to store control checksums for files by Garmin applications. It can verify data integrity of a file. The checksum must match for unmodified data. SUM is a binary file containing data to confirm accuracy of parent files. When read, SUM produces a numerical “checksum”. This can be compared to ensure nothing got altered. Garmin products generate it with an index file (extension IND). This stores descriptive information about the SUM structure.
