A STATE file saves a player’s progress in an emulated game run by RetroArch. Gamers use RetroArch to emulate and play old games. To save progress in RetroArch, create a save state. This state snapshot is saved in a STATE file. STATE files only open in RetroArch, unlike .SAV files.
To continue a STATE file, put it in the folder matching the ROM name. Restart RetroArch, load the game. Go to Quick Menu, set State Slot to “0”, and Load State.
RetroArch applies settings to all emulators. To configure individually, disable the global options file.
Set the directory to save states. If not set, RetroArch saves in the ROM directory.
To auto-save states regularly, set savestate_auto_save to true. Also set autosave_interval. But no new files appear automatically.
A script could copy all save and state files to a USB. This backs up RetroPie folder structure.
RetroArch works best for older consoles like PlayStation 1. Newer consoles often run better in standalone emulators. But RetroArch can work on newer systems too.
Save states let you bookmark any game point. Return later right where you left off. Manage slots to not overwrite states. Keybinds help load/save states.
Use Syncthing to sync Save States across devices. Progress syncs from Gaming PC to Android box to Steam Deck. Works for any RetroArch core using states. Saves and loads seamlessly.
