The Windows NT setup information file contains parameters for the installation process. It includes the target path, user data, display resolution and other settings. The default SIF filename is “winnt.sif”. If the installer cannot find this file, the installation may fail. A missing SIF file can mean the installation disk is damaged. SIF files are also called “answer files.”
Over 400 file types can be opened with File Viewer Plus software. We know of 9 different uses of the .SIF extension. The Adobe Setup Installation File format uses the .SIF extension too. We don’t yet know what these Adobe files contain.
Online SIF tools allow viewing, editing, converting, merging, splitting, and comparing SIF files without installation. If the SIF file is missing, the installation disk may need cleaning or replacement. SIF files are also called “answer files.” The unattended Windows NT installation process uses SIF files to store configuration settings.

The SIF file is a Synfig Studio project file. Synfig Studio is free open-source software for creating 2D animations using vector and bitmap artwork. SIF files are uncompressed so they can get large. You can save as SIFZ which compresses the contents into a smaller file. Synfig Studio also uses SFG files for embedding images, audio, etc. which use Zip compression.
Current Synfig Studio versions default to SIFZ when saving new files. SIFZ files are SIF files compressed with gzip. We describe SIF version 1.2 used in Synfig Studio >= 1.4. Since version 1.0 all real numbers use dot as decimal separator.
The root node and painting world is the canvas element. The top element of a SIF file is always a canvas tag. It has attributes like width, height, xres, yres, etc.
Synfig recognizes the SFG file format as an archival format. A SFG bundles a SIF and its resources in a Zip archive. In Synfig Studio images and sounds can be packed using Import Image Layer or Sound Layer.
