Serato Stems separates audio files into vocals, melody, bass and drums components in real time. The stems controls are in the Deck Header area of Sample Decks and Audio Tracks. They can be used with any Serato Studio library audio file. When triggered, the waveform changes color to match the audio. Muted sections appear grey.
Initialization takes time, especially first use per session. It also depends on file type, duration, and computer specs.
The .serato-stems file contains data Serato Studio uses to isolate and mute track components.
To delete .serato-stems files to save space: Open Serato Studio and select a stems audio file. Press CTRL + R (Windows) or CMD + R (Mac) to show the file location.
With lower powered laptops, leaving “Analyse for Stems” unticked prevents analysis until stems are used, avoiding excess power draw.
Stems are playable in software supporting the .mp4 format. They enable new live performance options like making edits and a cappellas.
Supported hardware includes Native Instruments’ Traktor Kontrol S4, S8 and F1 controllers. These allow hands-on control of Traktor’s Stem Decks.
In Serato Studio, hold Shift while clicking a stem icon to isolate it. Serato Studio features intuitive stems sampling and performance workflows.
Overall, Serato Stems unlocks creative new mixing and remixing possibilities by separating track elements. As adoption increases, more Stems releases can be expected.
