A SEED file contains time series values or instrument metadata. Time series values are waveform intervals recorded by instruments. Metadata includes instrument response and station location. The SEED format is used to monitor seismic earth motions. The Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks maintains this format. Files with values and metadata are in two parts: mini-SEED and Dataless SEED. Mini-SEED has time series. Dataless SEED has metadata. Without metadata, files are mini-SEED but always have .seed extension.
To open a .SEED file install a program supporting the format. If installed but not default, right-click the file, choose Open With and select the program. Check “Always use” box so it opens these files by default. We list programs supporting .SEED files. The format helps standardized acquisition across research sessions. Files store project configurations so BCI2000 provides consistent data. They are not human-readable outside this software. To open, the BCI2000 application is required.
