RTP files exist as 2 different types. Please find information about each of them below.

The rtp file extension stands for residue topology. Such a file contains default interactions for bonds and residue entries of atoms, bonds, angles, dihedrals and impropers in a protein. Parameters can override standard parameters in itp files. RTP files are used by Gromacs program pdb2gmx to convert Protein Data Bank .pdb files into Gromacs .top topology files for molecular dynamics simulation. Gromacs is software for simulating molecular dynamics. RTP files contain biochemical data representing molecular base parts and interactions. These data are integrated with Gromacs encoding for analysis. RTP files store residue information used by pdb2gmx for conversion.
