RMD files exist as 4 different types. Please find information about each of them below.

RMD files can be opened in any text editor. We recommend opening them in RStudio. It supports RMD syntax and can execute the code. These files contain R code chunks and text. The {knitr} package executes the R code. It creates a markdown document with code, outputs, and text. This is converted to HTML, PDF or Word.

To create an RMD file, install these packages: knitr, rmarkdown, markdown. Open a text editor. Save a new file with .rmd extension. This signifies R Markdown format. Markdown provides text structure and formatting. Headers, paragraphs, lists, links and images can be easily included.

A key R Markdown advantage is embedding R code chunks. They allow writing and executing R code seamlessly. RStudio converts RMD files to other formats like HTML, PDF, DOCX and PPTX.

R Markdown documents have .Rmd extension. They weave text with code. This produces formatted outputs. RMD files generate HTML, PDF or Word documents. We recommend HTML first. It compiles faster than PDF.

In RStudio, click File > New File > R Markdown to create a document. It has inputs for title, author, date and output format. Change these as needed. Markdown separates text from code. Text is treated as regular text unless in a code chunk.
