Registry keys are exported to REG files for backup before changes. REG files can be used to load or import registry keys to restore settings. REG files hold system and application settings, as well as hardware settings. REG file typically has a “.reg” file extension. It is a plain text file with registry entries and values in a specific format. Format has a header section identifying it as registry file. This is followed by key and value pairs representing registry entries.
