P7C files contain digital certificates used to authenticate identity over networks. These PKCS #7 certificate files include public keys generated with cryptography. Once imported, software adds the verified identity to trusted lists.
P7C files store certificate data in Base64 format. This allows easy storage, transmission, and sharing. Contents can be viewed in text editors. But require decoding software to display properly.
Windows can’t open P7C files by default. To associate P7C with an app, right-click file > Open With > Choose default program. Check “Always use this app” to set default. Options are Microsoft Certificate Manager or Apple Keychain Access.
P7C filenames end with .p7c and .p7b extensions. The same extensions work for single and multiple file certificates. Single files include private keys for authentication using public-private key pairs. Multiple files lack private keys, only exchanging public keys.
