The .download extension is temporarily added or switched with the original. One can sometimes resume unfinished downloads by double-clicking it. Some files like video or ZIP archives can open partially downloaded. Change .download to the original extension first.
You can try resuming the download by double-clicking. Or recover the file by deleting .download and opening it normally. If that fails, delete it and re-download. Some peer-to-peer sites also use .download for active downloads. The proper extension gets added after finishing.
Other download and peer-to-peer programs use .download too. All rename files once fully downloaded. To open, try a few different programs as .download is used differently.
The .download extension signifies a partial download created by browsers lacking a download manager. It contains incomplete content. The file has a compound name like MP4.download then restores the original after. Older Safari versions still use .download but Chrome now uses .CRdownload.
