OMW reads ESP, ESM, and BSA files. It uses new OMWADDON files for mods or patches. These are not compatible with the original game engine. OMW has multiple data directories so mods do not mix with original game files.
File extensions:
.omwaddon – addon files
.omwgame – game files
To install an OMWADDON file, add it to the OpenMW config file under data and content. Make sure OpenMW and any tools use the config file to see the addon. If it still does not show up, post on the mod compatibility forum for help.
You can also rename the OMWADDON file to ESP so mods tools recognize it. Then enable the ESP file in OpenMW.
Data lines in the config file specify directories with game data. An OMWADDON file is not a directory. If a mod works with original Morrowind, it likely works with OpenMW.
