It was founded in 1997 by Intuit, Microsoft and Checkfree as unified specification for electronic exchange of financial data between institutions, businesses and consumers. OFX files contain financial information like transactions and statements. They can be edited easily using text editor, but it is simpler to use program supporting OFX format.
Open Financial Exchange replaced older Microsoft .ofc format. OFX allows for secure internet exchange of finance data. Consumers can do online banking and bill pay. OFX format also enables transfer of tax information. Olicom Fax files use .ofx extension as image containers in electronic documents.
