The .npk file extension refers to a software package file used for delivering updates to MikroTik routers. This info includes configurations for IP addresses, services, interfaces, ports, email, users, and system resources. The .npk files store firmware, applications, and resources in a compressed binary format. They are developed by MikroTik, a Latvian company specializing in routers and wireless IPS. The files can be downloaded from MikroTik’s website and uploaded to the router to update RouterOS. After uploading, the router must be rebooted before the upgrade completes. Some examples of .npk package names and contents are: advanced-tools for network monitoring, framerelay for frame relay support, lcd for LCD monitors, and web-proxy for web proxies. The files are named using keywords about the contents or version number like advanced-tools-2.0.npk. On Windows, .npk files can be managed in the Winbox GUI application from MikroTik to configure RouterOS devices. We provide information to help users interact with these files including compatible software, editing instructions, and conversion options. Be cautious with .npk files from unknown sources as the extension could be used by harmful software.
