The NFS file extension has four primary file types. The Netflix subtitle file contains subtitles for content downloaded through the Netflix mobile app. These NFS files allow offline viewing. The Network File System may create a temporary NFS file. This temporary copy is made when a file is opened or deleted by an NFS process. These temporary NFS files are typically deleted automatically when no longer needed. If a file delete request is sent to a server while an NFS client still has the file open, the server creates an NFS file. This allows the server to maintain the file until processes close it. NFS appends characters, so temporary NFS files rarely end in “.nfs”.
The Netflix mobile app allows users to download content for offline viewing. Downloads include the option for subtitles, stored in NFS files. This allows offline viewing with subtitles. NFS files thus provide a way to safely store downloaded content on a user’s device.
NFS files are also associated with the Navigon GPS navigation software. These NFS files contain 3D terrain data used by Navigon. Unfortunately Navigon is no longer supported.
