MXP files are add-ons created or used by Adobe Extension Manager. They extend features or add new functions to Adobe programs like Photoshop. Adobe Extension Manager can enable and disable MXP extensions. It often comes bundled with Adobe software purchases.
MXP files may also be 3D design projects made in Materialise’s 3-matic software. Or they may be initialization data for Autodesk’s 3DS Max 3D modeling and animation program.
MXP files have been used up to Adobe CS5. Later versions use the ZXP format. Since Creative Cloud 2015, Extension Manager is no longer included. Add-ons must now be installed directly within the application.
MXP files are compressed installers containing extensions for Macromedia Extension Manager. They are downloaded and installed to extend or add features to Macromedia applications like Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash and more.
Though MXP files are commonly Adobe Extension Manager plugins, 7 other programs can also use this format. MXP files belong to the broader Plugin Files category, which contains 179 file types. They work on Mac and Windows systems. The main software that opens them is Adobe Extension Manager from Adobe Systems.
