MDF files exist as 4 different types. Please find information about each of them below.

MDF stands for Media Disc Image Format. It is used by Alcohol 120% to save disc images. These files are like ISO and are used to store disc data. However, the data is stored differently. MDF files can have multiple layers like dual-layer disks and multiple tracks like CDs and DVDs. MDS files can store where the layers start and end on the disk i.e. header and track data in MDS files. While storing the data, MDF files keep track of which parts belong to which layer. It also stores the location of the layer breach bit. This is a CD and DVD copy protection system.
MDF files were developed by Alcohol Software. Alcohol 120% is a program that Creates MDF and MSD files while creating or burning CDs and DVDs. MDF files can also be created without MSD files. When a disc images file is downloaded from the internet, they may also be MDF files.
Some programs that can open MDF files are Alcohol 120%, Daemon Tools and PowerISO. They create a virtual CD or DVD drive. MDF files are used to make a copy of a CD or DVD on the computer as they have data on the layout of the disc. Just mount the MDF file and access it like a real disc.

The MDF file extension stores user data for Microsoft SQL Server. It is the primary SQL Server data file storing actual user data like tables, indexes, and other database components. SQL Server can auto-grow or auto-shrink the MDF file to improve performance. Users can load and attach MDF files to a SQL database. The MDF file structure has pages divided into a 96-byte header with pointers, IDs, and record counts.
Users can create multiple MDF data files for one SQL database in file groups. The default MDF location depends on the SQL Server version: SQL Server 2005 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA, SQL Server 2008 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA, and SQL Server 2008 R2 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA.
To create a database from MDF and LDF files: start by placing the files into the SQL Server directory, right-click the “Databases” folder, and choose “Attach” to attach the file. Then, select “Add”, locate the .mdf and .ldf files, and click “OK”. SQL Server can then access the database in these files.

MDF files store raw measurement data and metadata for analysis. The automobile industry uses the Measurement Data Format (MDF) to record and exchange data obtained from measurements. An MDF file contains unprocessed measurement information and metadata for later interpretation.
The .MDF extension can also link to translation memory data files. These files help searches in Trados, a computer-assisted translation program. Other programs using MDF formats include ProWorx, FactoryTalk View Studio, and the game Star Trek: Armada.
To open an MDF file, update the application used to create it. Commonly this includes automobile data analysis software, SDL Trados studio, or the relevant game/program.
