LOCKFILE files are used by Mac OS X. Apple originally developed this file type for their operating system. LOCKFILE files are system files that lock preferences for applications. When an application opens, it recreates any missing LOCKFILES. These lock files can be found in the Library Preferences folder.
You may get errors trying to open LOCKFILES. This could happen if your anti-virus blocks the files. Or if the files are corrupted. To open LOCKFILES, Mac OS should associate them with the application automatically. If not, you need to associate the LOCKFILE extension with the application in Windows. Then reset permissions if needed.
Many files only contain simple text. If so, a text editor may open them. LOCKFILES use the Mac OS X plist lock format. This format was created by Apple. It is mainly used for system purposes. The LOCKFILE extension is classified as a temporary system file. It may appear in other types of files too. But those may not open properly in Mac OS X.
