The KMP file extension is used by Korg’s Trinity and Triton keyboards to store keymap data. This data maps MIDI notes to specific keyboard sounds. The KMP format consists of text data with commands like .FF#, FZ#M, and ZAL. FF# maps MIDI notes to Trinity voice numbers. FZ#M defines the MIDI note, velocity ranges, portamento time, and mono/poly aftertouch.
KMP files can be opened on Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. Popular software that supports KMP includes Awave Studio and Translator 7. The KMP3D plugin for SketchUp and the wkmpt tool can also edit KMP files. Over 400 other file types can also be viewed with File Viewer Plus.
Two main file types use the .kmp extension. First is the Mario Kart Wii course description file. Second is the Korg Trinity/Triton keymap file. Problems can occur when .kmp files are incorrectly associated with the wrong software programs. To open a .kmp file, first double-click the file icon to launch the appropriate program. If no program opens, you may need to install Awave Studio which is the primary KMP file software.
