J2K files are images compressed using wavelet instead of DCT compression. This file format is used by JPEG 2000 files to store metadata in XML unlike JPEG using EXIF. J2K files support 15-bit color, alpha transparency, and lossless compression. J2K file format is the same as JPEG 2000, often saved as JP2 and JPC.
In order to open a J2K file, download JPEG-2000 JP2 File or similar software. If your computer won’t open J2K files even with the software, change the file associations on Windows or Mac to always open J2K files using JPEG-2000 JP2 File or another program that uses J2K.
If that doesn’t work, contact the software developer such as PC Software Company for assistance. If the J2K file is corrupt, it may not open properly. J2K files fall under Raster Image Files category along with 522 other extensions, but most are not compatible. The JPEG 2000 Image format was developed by Joint Photographic Experts Group.
