The HIP file extension is used to store Houdini projects. Houdini is a 3D animation and visual effects software developed by SideFX. HIP files contain 3D scenes, animations, effects and other data created in Houdini. These files may be saved by the full Houdini Master software or its lower-cost Houdini Escape and Houdini Apprentice versions. Houdini Escape and Houdini Apprentice use the HIPNC file extension instead of HIP. More information and Houdini software downloads are available on the SideFX website.
The Houdini software creates 3D images and animations used in films like Avatar and Terminator Salvation. It comes in Escape, Master, and Batch versions. The Houdini Engine is an API extracting Houdini’s technologies into a procedural engine for integrating into other applications.
HIP files are also used by SAP SuccessFactors, a human capital management system. So the HIP extension may indicate a SAP SuccessFactors file rather than a Houdini project.
