HDL files are data files used by the HotDocs software. The average computer user does not commonly encounter HDL files. If you have issues opening an HDL file, this information may help. The HDL file extension is used to save program commands for creating and editing documents in HotDocs. When HotDocs adds or edits a document, it saves commands in an HDL file. These serve as template documents.
HotDocs was created by Matthew Bender & Company. HDL files are stored in specific folders under My Documents. All HotDocs libraries are in:\My Documents\HotDocs\Libraries\. HDL templates are in:\My Documents\HotDocs\Templates\.
If an HDL file cannot open, the software reading it may be outdated. Check for updates from the manufacturer. Also scan for viruses, which sometimes prevent files opening. An HDL file could also be corrupted. Try to retrieve the file again pristine.
HDL files are used on Windows operating systems. HotDocs software handles HDL files by default. The file extension is not exclusive to HotDocs though. Over 1,300 other applications use the HDL extension too.
