When a memo field is defined in a DBF file, an .fpt file is created. The .fpt file contains the memo field data and links to the associated DBF file. Any changes to the DBF file also update the .fpt file.
The .fpt file can hold various data like text, images, and links. The format allows flexible alphanumeric string lengths. So Alpha Five databases use ten character memo fields in DBF files. These reference and link to full memo data stored in .fpt files.
