FLAC is an open, royalty-free audio format. It compresses audio files to 50-70% of their original size without loss of quality. FLAC files can be decompressed to an identical copy of the original audio file. A FLAC file has the .flac extension. It is an audio file compressed in the Free Lossless Audio Codec format. FLAC files are about 60% smaller than the original files. The format is open-source, developed by Xiph.Org Foundation. It is supported on many platforms.
FLAC is specifically designed for efficient compression of audio data, unlike general compression formats like ZIP. Android supports regular FLAC since version 3.1. iOS supports FLAC since version 11. BlackBerry added support in OS 5.0.
To play or edit FLAC files, use appropriate software like Adobe Audition. If you have problems with FLAC files, check you have software installed that supports the format. Update the software to the newest version if needed. On Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, associate the .flac extension with software that can open FLAC files.
