FGD stands for Forge Game Data. It is a plain-text file format used to define all entities in a game for a map editor. This allows mappers to select entities and configure their properties within the editor. Originally, Hammer was called Hammer 3.x Worldcraft. It was developed as The Forge, hence the name Forge Game Data. Due to trademark issues, the name The Forge could not be used for Hammer’s final version. However, the file extension stayed as .FGD.
