The F4M file extension is associated with Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming Flash Media Manifest files. F4M files contain information about resolution, codec, and availability of multi-bitrate media files. They are XML formatted text files created by the File Packager tool in Flash Media Server.
When you package media to stream, the content is split into F4F fragment files. The F4M manifest file is created along with F4X Index files to accompany the F4F fragments. Once packaging is complete, the files are delivered by Adobe Media Server for streaming.
Although designed for HTTP Dynamic Streaming, F4M has expanded support to RTMP, RTMFP and other transport schemes. The File Packager tool that creates F4M files runs on Windows and Linux systems. It is located in the f4fpackager folder within Flash Media Server’s root install.
If an installed application that handles F4M files does not open them by default, you can right-click on the file. From the menu, choose “Open with” and select the proper application. Check the box to always use that program for this file type. This will add the association to the system registry for future use.
On Mac OS, there is no file association option. But installed applications that support F4M should be available in the right-click menu for selecting and opening files. If no application can open an F4M file, the likely cause is a corrupted file or incomplete installation.
