The DOWNLOAD extension is added to the filename of the target file or switched with the file’s original extension during download. Some programs use the DOWNLOAD extension for partially downloaded Internet files. The file gets the proper extension once downloading is complete.
You may resume downloads by double-clicking DOWNLOAD files. Some files like video or ZIP archives can open if they didn’t fully download. Change the DOWNLOAD suffix to the original extension and open with the right program.
If you can’t resume or recover the file, delete it and try downloading again.
The DOWNLOAD extension indicates a partially downloaded file created when no download manager is used. It contains the downloaded content so far. Older Chrome versions saved partial downloads as DOWNLOAD files. The latest Chrome versions now use CRDOWNLOAD instead.
Other programs also use the DOWNLOAD extension temporarily during partial downloads before renaming with the correct extension.
