The Desktop Management Interface (DMI) generates a standard framework for managing and tracking components in a computer. The DMI abstracts these components from the software that manages them. The DMI marked the first move into desktop-management standards. Before DMI, no standardized source of information provided details about components in a personal computer. The DMTF defined an “End of Life” process for DMI. This ended on March 31, 2005.
dmidecode dumps a computer’s DMI table contents in a human-readable format. The table contains system hardware descriptions and serial numbers. dmidecode retrieves this information without hardware probing. This improves report speed and safeness. However, this makes presented information potentially unreliable. SMBIOS stands for System Management BIOS. DMI stands for Desktop Management Interface. Both were developed by the DMTF. dmidecode locates the DMI table.
