DjVu is an open file format. The file format specification is published. The original authors distribute an open-source implementation named “DjVuLibre” under the GNU General Public License. DjVu files can use the .DJVU or the .DJV file extension. Developed by AT&T Labs, a DJVU file is a graphics file format. It is intended for scanned images, like the PDF format. DjVu files can contain compressed, high-quality images, text, and drawings. So it’s used for eBooks, manuals, newspapers, and ancient documents. The main cause precluding users from opening DJVU files is no program that can handle DJVU files is installed. Download and install WinDjView or a compatible program. Check if you have the latest version of WinDjView. Sometimes newer versions support new formats.
DjVu is for scanned documents and books with text, drawings, images and photographs. It was developed by AT&T Labs. It uses image layer separation of text and background images, progressive loading, arithmetic coding and lossy compression for bitonal images. DjVu can achieve better compression ratios than JPEG and GIF for colour documents. Scanned documents at 300 DPI with full colour up to 25 MB can be compressed to 30 to 100 KB.
DjVu allows distributing high resolution images through the internet. DjVu viewers, plugins, encoders and decoders are available for Windows and Mac. Due to its smaller file size and converting text into DJVU format, it is superior to PDF. Files can be separated into background, foreground, and a mask image.
