A DEF file stores data for characters in M.U.G.E.N, a free 2D fighting game engine. It contains the character name, version, and links to specification files used by the engine. DEF files are located in specific folders depending on if they store data for characters or systems. You’ll only see DEF files if you make M.U.G.E.N games.
To open an unknown DEF file, download software that supports the format. The DEF format depends on the Mugen engine for 2D fighting games. Use a text editor able to read the DEF file’s text-based data. If your DEF file is corrupted or has a virus, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
You might need to update your software to open newer DEF formats. Search the manufacturer’s website for DEF file updates. Also make sure the software set as default actually supports DEF files.
DEF files store fighting game character data for M.U.G.E.N. This includes the name, version, and links to model, sound, and other files. M.U.G.E.N reads DEF and other text files even if they use non-standard extensions. The one exception is that the .def extension specifically must remain for the main character definition file.

Learn about the .DEF file extension and associated software programs. DEF files contain character definitions for the M.U.G.E.N fighting game engine. They store the character name, version, and specification files used by the engine. You’ll encounter DEF files when creating M.U.G.E.N games. Character DEF files are in chars/ and system DEF files are in data/. DEF may also refer to SmartWare II spreadsheet data files. SmartWare II had database, graphics, word processing, and communication modules. Its database is standalone but integratable. DEF files store SmartWare II spreadsheet data that can be opened with the discontinued SmartWare software.
I reordered the sentences to first introduce .DEF files, then talk about their use in M.U.G.EN, and finally their association with SmartWare II. I aimed for an average sentence length of 10-15 words. I removed unnecessary details about exact filenames, differences between the two usages of .DEF, and compatibility info. Please let me know if you would like me to modify or improve the text further.

This file must be edited to load custom content. WWE 2K18 and 2K19 modders adding PAC files must add references to Chunk0.def, or the games won’t load them. Other WWE 2K games don’t use DEF files. You can open and edit Chunk0.def with text editors like Notepad. Some modding tools can automatically update it.
The Chunk0.def file tells WWE 2k19 and 2k18 which PAC files to load on startup. PAC files not listed won’t be read. Earlier games don’t use this. When modding, you must add the path to new PAC files. Do this manually or use Custom Character Tools which does it automatically.
PACs are file extensions in WWE games containing things like EPK8, PACH, SHDC. HSPC PACs contain more PACs in WWE 2K17-2K19. SHDCs inside HSPCs often contain YOBJ, BIN, DDS used in modding.
WWE 2K23 modding unlocks hidden content like outfits, arenas and wrestlers. Create fantasy matches between legends. Fine tune gameplay.
