The DCS file extension refers to the Desktop Color Separation format. It is used for color separated files in bitmap format. DCS files are often used with the QuarkXPress software. They can also be viewed with the Adobe Illustrator program.
These bitmap files are separated into four colors: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. This allows accurate color reproduction. The DCS format was developed for high end color printing.
To open a DCS file, QuarkXPress is the preferred software. Adobe Illustrator and other graphics programs can also display DCS files. If double clicking on a DCS file does not open it, try right clicking. Then select “Open with” to choose a program.
Converting DCS files may be required to use them in documents. Compatible software tools can export DCS files to other formats. This allows the color separated bitmaps to be edited or included in non-DCS files.
