Files with D71 extension are Commodore Emulator files. The D71 file extension is used by emulators of 1980’s Commodore home computers. Specifically, the file format stores disk images of 1571 floppy disks used by Commodore 64 and 128 models. D71 files can be opened with the VICE emulator made by VICE. VICE runs on Windows, Unix, and Amiga operating systems.
To open a D71 file, download and install the VICE emulator. VICE supports various vintage Commodore formats. After installing VICE, the operating system should automatically open D71 files with it. If not, manually associate the D71 extension with VICE. Before using a unfamiliar D71 file, check it opens properly in VICE.
D71 files are acquired from old Commodore 1571 floppies. Users dump the floppy data to D71 format. The files can then be shared online with other vintage computing enthusiasts. D71 stores disk images from both single and double sided 1571 disks. Double sided disks store twice the data at 70 tracks per disk.
