The .crypt12 extension appended to a .DB file creates an encrypted database used by WhatsApp to back up user messages. WhatsApp has used different encryption algorithms throughout its existence. Users may find .CRYPT7, .CRYPT8, .CRYPT10, or .crypt12 files – all encrypted message backups. To decrypt a CRYPT12 database and view the messages, first locate the key file storing the encryption key. It is at /data/data/com.whatsapp/files/key. CRYPT12 files are on Android SD cards with WhatsApp installed, in /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases.
Programs supporting CRYPT12 files are below by system platform. CRYPT12 files can occur on any platform, but may not open properly everywhere. WhatsApp Viewer can decrypt CRYPT12. An Android phone in developer mode, Windows computer, Java and ADB drivers are required. The extension denotes the encryption algorithm. Use Omni-Crypt to convert CRYPT12 to legacy CRYPT Android files. Or use WhatCrypt web program to decrypt and store CRYPT12 files. Manually opening CRYPT12 files is not recommended.
