A CRYPT file contains encrypted backups of WhatsApp messages or settings. WhatsApp creates encrypted message backups as CRYPT files. To prevent decryption if stolen, WhatsApp updates the encryption used for the files periodically. That is why there are .CRYPT6 to .CRYPT14 file extensions.
Converting a .db.crypt file to another format may not be possible as the file has encrypted data specific to WhatsApp’s database structure. To access the contents in a different format: Decrypt the file with a WhatsApp decryption tool. Export the decrypted data and convert it if necessary.
.db.crypt files provide security for the data within.
CRYPT files contain encrypted WhatsApp user profile information, messages, images and audio. They store backups synchronized with the Google profile. CRYPT files are usually msgstore.db.crypt saved in /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases/.
To restore messages from a CRYPT file, uninstall WhatsApp. Rename the file to msgstore.db.crypt, reinstall WhatsApp and select “Restore” when prompted. NOTE: CRYPT files are encrypted so must be decrypted before restoring. WhatsApp can decrypt files if logged in to the account used to create the backup. Alternatively, WhatsApp may request a key file saved on the device to decrypt.
CRYPT files are associated with the WhatsApp Encrypted Database format. They can be viewed with WhatsApp Messenger on Windows, iOS and Android.
CRYPT files are encrypted WhatsApp backups located in /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases/ on Android devices. For each WhatsApp version, a different encryption algorithm is used. The extension like .CRYPT6 shows the encryption algorithm.
To decrypt a database file, click “Decrypt WhatsApp Database”. The app detects the database file on the SD Card and decrypts it.
After uninstalling WhatsApp, rename the CRYPT file to msgstore.db.crypt. Reinstall WhatsApp and select “Restore” when prompted to retrieve messages.
