A CRX file contains a Chrome extension. It has compressed files and metadata to install the extension. When you download and install a CRX file in Chrome, Chrome checks if the extension works properly. If it works, Chrome extracts the CRX content and installs the extension. Then you can use the extension.
You can also rename a CRX file to ZIP and open it. A CRX file is a ZIP file with extra headers. If you want to convert a CRX to EXE, use an installer program.
CRXViewer acts online to extract, view, convert, and download browser extensions. It works with Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Opera extensions.
After installing a CRX extension, Chrome deletes the file. You can manually install custom CRX files.
Chrome extensions let you customize Chrome. You can download CRX files and drag and drop them to install. Then the extension will be in your download folder. To install it:
1. Open Chrome and click the 3 dots, then More Tools, then Extensions.
2. Switch on Developer Mode on the top right.
3. Drag your CRX file to the Extensions window.
CRX uses ZIP formatting but with custom headers. So normal Zip programs may not open CRX files.
