In macOS, .CDR files are disk images created with Disk Utility to make backups of CDs or DVDs. You can mount them as virtual drives to access the contents without needing the physical disc. To create a .CDR, select “Convert” in Disk Utility, open a disc image, choose “DVD/CD master” format, and save. Other .CDR files store folder and file archives for burning data to discs, like ISO images in Windows. The extension is also used for ripped CD audio tracks, similar to .AIF/.WAV but without header info. .CDR files can also store vehicle crash sensor data. You can view and edit .CDR files using CorelDRAW or Adobe Illustrator and print or convert to other formats. To open .CDR files on Windows, rename .CDR to .ISO. On Mac, use Disk Utility. If able to play the .cdr file in VLC media player, can also convert it there to formats like MP3, FLAC, WAV, OGG. Opening .cdr files, particularly with “Raw CD Audio Data,” is tricky as not a standard format.
Other .cdr files could be Mac DVD/CD archives for burning data like ISO in Windows. The Raw Audio CD Data format also uses .cdr extension – ripped/copied music from CDs. Another use is Crash Data Retrieval files from sensors in vehicles with Crash Data Retrieval devices.
To create .cdr file in Apple Disk Utility, select “Convert”, open disc image, select “DVD/CD master” and save. If .cdr file does not open in Windows, try changing extension from .cdr to .iso. Media players/digital audio workstations compatible with .cdr can edit using respective tools.
