A C4D file contains a 3D model or scene created with Cinema 4D, a professional 3D modeling and animation program. Such files include objects with position, rotation, pivot points, meshes, and animation data. Users save design progress in C4D files, and export models to image or video formats.
The main file type associated with Cinema 4D is the C4D file. It uses the “.c4d” extension. Cinema 4D can export files in formats like .obj, .fbx, and .stl that other 3D software supports.
C4D files can be opened and edited in Cinema 4D or other 3D software supporting the format. However, some software may only open and view file contents rather than allow editing.
To open a C4D file, suitable software supporting the format must be installed. Without it, a “How do you want to open this file?” Windows alert occurs. To resolve, right-click the file to access Properties. The Change button allows selecting a compatible program, like Cinema 4D. Checking “Always use…” associates C4D files with Cinema 4D.
If a C4D file does not open in Cinema 4D despite it being installed, create a file association via Properties. If Cinema 4D is not visible, browse to select it manually.
Updating Cinema 4D to the latest version or reinstalling it may also fix C4D file open failures. Corruption or malware infection can prevent opening too.
