The BRL file extension refers mainly to the MicroBraille file format. This format can open with the Duxbury Braille Translator software. The BRL extension is similar to the more common BRF file extension. Both BRL and BRF files help make digital publications accessible for blind users.
To create a BRL file in CASC Braille 2000, select “New” then “Braille File”. Name the file and pick “MicroBraille File (brl)” from the file type menu. Click “OK” when done. To open a BRL file in CASC Braille 2000, choose “Open” then “Braille File”. Find the file and click “Open”. Note that Duxbury MegaDots software has been discontinued.
Many programs can open MicroBraille files. When you double click a BRL file in Windows, it looks at the file extension. If Windows does not recognize the extension, you will see a message to select an app to open the BRL file.
To associate BRL files with a program in Windows, right click the file. Choose “Open with” and then “Choose another app”. Pick the desired program and check “Always use this app to open *.BRL files”.
On Mac, Ctrl-click the BRL file and click “Open with”>”Other”. Then select the program to always open these files. Converting BRL files may require yet another program. If you still cannot open the file, research software that handles the MicroBraille file format specifically.
